About us

Our vision is a government office portfolio that enhances public service delivery, builds resilience across government and delivers enduring value for New Zealanders.

What we do

The Government Property Office (GPO) supports MBIE's Chief Executive in their role as system leader for government property.

We:

  • set the strategic direction for and manage the government's office portfolio
  • provide guidance for government agencies on good practice property planning, leasing, delivery and management
  • set expectations for agencies in line with the Government Office Strategy.

Government Office Strategy

How we work with agencies

GPO advises and supports mandated government agencies with:

  • office planning and management
  • commercial advisory and lease negotiations
  • building performance and workplace design standards, tools and templates
  • exploring opportunities to co-locate with other agencies
  • property research, data and insights.

Government property mandate

We also manage the Government Property Portal, a central platform for property data and insights to support property planning and decision-making.

Government Property Portal

Our governance structure

GPO has two main governance forums that provide strategic advice and oversight of the government property portfolio.

  • Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission
  • Te Puni Kōkiri

Property System Leaders Group

A forum of agency property practitioners, this group provides advice to GPO on system-wide practices, emerging risks, key issues, and opportunities for improvement. The Group meets quarterly.

  • Ministry of Social Development
  • Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment

Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

GPO acknowledges the Crown’s obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi and is committed to upholding the Māori-Crown relationship in how we plan and deliver government offices.

Through the Government Office Strategy and in our day-to-day work, we are committed to the Māori-Crown relationship underpinned by Te Tiriti/The Treaty.

We recognise that meaningful engagement with Māori is ongoing, not a one-off activity. We are committed to building strong foundations, strengthening Māori–Crown capability within our team, and forming enduring relationships. This includes areas such as leasing, where iwi as landowners and developers have a growing presence in commercial property, and in design and architecture, where Māori perspectives and approaches should shape how spaces are experienced by kaimahi and the wider community.
